We recommend that your pet be seen by a veterinarian for a yearly check-up including a dental exam and blood work. Vaccinations are important and routinely given to protect your pet from serious infectious diseases.
Heartworms, transmitted to dogs from mosquitos, can be detected by performing a specific blood test. Dogs may not always show clinical signs such as a cough or tire easily even though they may be infested with many adult worms. Left untreated, dogs eventually develop heart failure and die. Although less common, cats too can be infected with heartworms.
It’s common for pets to have other internal parasites such as roundworms and tapeworms. A fecal exam is necessary to detect parasites and special medicines will need to be prescribed to keep your pet parasite free.
We will check your pet for ear mites and ear infections. Your pet should be seen right away if it often shakes its head, scratches at its ears, there is any discharge from the ears, or fails to respond to your voice command.
Your pet should be examined for fleas, mites, and ticks and be treated appropriately with control medicines and insecticidal shampoo. Fleas will leave black specks in your pet’s hair coat called “flea dirt.” We should see your pet right away should you notice any persistent scratching, licking and chewing, redness or hair loss.
Your pet’s nutritional needs will change throughout the different stages of its life so a routine check-up is essential to address these changing dietary needs. Even with a normal, healthy diet, pets can develop vitamin deficiencies which can lead to digestive and behavioral issues, as well as lethargy and skin conditions.
